May - Sports
4th grade
I introduced the names of the sports in a previous class (the last 10 or 15 minutes), by playing hangman with them. So I used only cognates, not use any translation or explanation.
Then I prepared written material, with vocabulary and translation. The wordsearch was ok. It was easy for many students, but not so easy for a few of them, who do not yet know how to read lower case. This is one of the reasons that I always ask them to do written activities in pairs, so one can help each other (sometimes this help is like copying the other one’s answers).
For exercise 2, they took more time to answer and they looked a little tired. Maybe I should have not done 19 items, but 12 or 14 max. For a 9 years old kid, it was too tiring. But I wanted to use the space I had on the paper, so I always use the max I can. Some students were really smart, and they knew that if they paid attention in a key letter, like the M in IGNROOMT, they would find MOTORING easily. But some of them just stayed stucked and lazy. We started in one class and finished in the next one.
Second class about sports:
The problem is that there is always someone (sometwo, somethree…) that forgets the paper or loses it. But I do not give another one. I started doing a mimicry game. I did the mimicry of the sports they had on the paper and they had to guess. Then, anybody who wanted to perform the sports mimicry could do. It took more than half of the class and I used the remaining time to correct the activity. I correct like I use to do. Ask them to come to the board and write the answer, so they can practice a little more and it is something that kids like doing.
Third class
I wrote on the board the words “easy - I can play” and “difficult - I can’t play” and asked some students to stand before the board. I said the name of the sport and they had to move from one side to the other. After moving I used to say sentences like “Oh, Arthur can(‘t) play ____”. I gave the paper with the crosswords and some students finished in one class. There are two mistakes: numbers 10 and 5 positions are incorrect.
Fourth class
I asked them not to do the can/can't exercise, because it would be more difficult to explain the concept in my last class with the group, as I was leaving the job. So I just checked who did and decided to do a numbers review by playing bingo with them.
