April 4th to 6th - colors - part 2
Two classes were not enough again to finish the mixing colors activity. As a warm up, I prepared a song to sing along with the students and to practice their listening skills. To check if they were understanding the song right, after each part I asked what color was pronounced. The easiest for them to understand was yellow, blue and purple. For green, red and orange I noticed that some students were in doubt. I tried to teach the verb to like by doing a heart symbol with my hands and pronouncing the color right after, like "I like green", but that was not so clear. I wanted them to sing at least that sentence of the song, so we pronounced "I like_____" and the name of the color.
I tried to start a conversation with the verse "What is your favorite color?", like the song says. But, again, not everybody was paying attention. But some students from the 2nd grade got the question, and answered "purple", for example. In each class, the song played three or four times and stayed in my head until the end of the weekend. In each repetition, some of them danced, some sang only the names of the colors and many of them shaked their colored pencils when the name of the color was pronounced.
Then, when it was time to restart the mixing colors activity, more than half of the class had passed. I thought that I would spend less time and the kids would finish it fast, but I always stay the maximum time I can with one activity. The main problem to continue that activity in another class was that some students had forgotten their English notebook, some of them thought they had not brought the paper to school and only by the end of the class they figured out they had, and some of them were too lazy to finish.
After mixing the colors, I asked them to write the name of the color they had in the result of the experiment. Some of them wrote like the way it is pronounced, like "blek", instead of "black"; some asked me how to write "brown", which was nice, because some new vocabulary came out.And some wrote that the mix of red and blue was "red blue", instead of "purple", which I also considered as right. There was not only one right answer. The color that resulted in each paper was a little different from other student papers. For the ones who do not know how to write yet, I just said it was ok.
For the ones who did not finish, in the end of any class, or while the class do something else, I go around the class, helping the ones who did not finish. Enough with colors.
